If you were to ask Real Estate Wars’ Kylie McCollough what her must-have beauty product is, she would undoubtedly answer sunscreen — every single time. The momtrepreneur has never been more passionate about this skincare essential than she is today, and there is a very important reason why.
Kylie recently opened up to The Lookbook about a traumatic incident in her past. The story begins a little over two years ago. While getting ready for a fitness competition (that’s right, in addition to to selling luxe real estate, the mother of two also competes), Kylie’s makeup artist noticed a scratch on her nose. While her makeup artist seemed concerned, Kylie didn't think too deep into it. "I probably just nicked myself with my nail," she recalled telling her makeup artist. However, the makeup artist insisted that she should get it checked out. Luckily, Kylie decided to take her MUA's advice and saw a doctor. There she was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, which is a form of skin cancer (you may recall that The Real Housewives of New York's Bethenny Frankel recently underwent surgery for the same disease).
Soon after her diagnosis, Kylie had to have a lengthy procedure done. "I underwent four hours of surgery for the removal process, and then another four hours of reconstructive surgery," she said. "They rebuilt the right side of my face by using my left cheek."
As a fitness competitor, tanning was a norm for Kylie, but this scary experience has completely changed her perception on the dangerous habit. "In high school before prom, you tanned," she recounted. "If you went to Cancun for spring break, you tanned. Tanning is still acceptable [in today's society], but it causes cancer, and I'm a prime example."
Kylie has been cancer-free for two years now, and is definitely never stepping foot in a tanning booth again. And she constantly stresses the importance of protecting your skin whenever she can: "Wear sunscreen — a base tan is not worth it!"
